The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety is giving students, faculty, and staff another layer of protection with the help of a mobile application called Hawk Watch.
Hawk Watch, which is powered by the campus safety app Rave Guardian, allows users to invite friends, family, or UI DPS to act as a virtual safety escort, or “guardian,” when they travel from one location to another.
To activate the “guardian” feature, users are prompted to enter an estimated travel time and destination into the app and select a guardian. If the user does not check in or deactivate the safety timer upon arrival at their final destination, the app notifies their guardian and shares their GPS location so the guardian can check on them.
Should a user run in to trouble during their trip, Hawk Watch also includes a panic button feature that gives the user direct access to 9-1-1 or the UI Department of Public Safety depending on their location and proximity to campus.
Is my privacy protected?
Profile data is stored privately and securely within Rave Mobile Safety’s redundant and geographically diverse databases. Your profile can only be viewed by UI Public Safety when your safety timer expires, when you send a non-anonymous tip, or when you call University of Iowa Police from the app.
Can Rave Guardian track me?
Rave Guardian cannot be used to locate you without your knowledge. Your profile and location (if you have enabled the location service within the app) are only available to UI Public Safety when your timer expires or when you place a call to the University of Iowa Police through the app.
Is UI Public Safety notified every time my timer expires?
No. UI Public Safety is only notified of your timer expiring if you have selected “Hawk Watch” to be your guardian, either as the primary guardian or secondary guardian. The app will remind you to turn off your safety timer a few minutes before it expires.
Does Rave Guardian work off-campus?
The features of the app will work off-campus; however, if you have an emergency at an off-campus location you should dial 9-1-1. The tip feature is for University of Iowa campus locations only.
Can my guardian be someone who is not on campus?
Anyone can be your guardian as long as they’ve downloaded the app and you’ve added them to your guardian list. Guardians can be a friend, family member, room mate, or UI Public Safety.
What is the difference between the "call University of Iowa Police" and the "call 911" feature?
The “Call University of Iowa Police” feature will route your call to the University of Iowa Emergency Communications Dispatch center. We encourage students, faculty and staff to use this feature while on campus. The “Call 9-1-1” feature will route your call to the nearest emergency call center exactly as if you placed the call by dialing 9-1-1.
Does the 911 feature work off-campus?
Anyone can call 9-1-1 from within Rave Guardian. Your call will be directed to the nearest 9-1-1 call center, exactly as if you placed the call by dialing it yourself.
What should I include in my profile?
The more information you provide, the more UI Public Safety knows if they need to assist you in an emergency. At a minimum, your address (home and school), your physical description and a recent photo are great places to start. If you have a particular health issue or other personal safety concern, you can include that information as well. Hawk Watch users should only provide as much information as they are comfortable sharing.
Does it matter what email address I use?
Yes. If you wish to take advantage of the campus-specific features, you should use your University of Iowa email address when creating a profile on the app. By doing so, you gain access to the Hawk Watch network, which allows you to call UI Public Safety directly, choose UI Public Safety as your guardian, and send anonymous crime tips to UI Public Safety directly.
Are the tips sent through Rave Guardian anonymous?
Yes. All tips are automatically set to be anonymous unless the user un-checks the “make anonymous” box before sending in the tip.
Can I still contact UI Public Safety if I don’t use this app?
Absolutely! When in doubt, call 9-1-1 for emergencies. The University of Iowa Police non-emergency line is 319-335-5022.
