The University of Iowa

A message about the first home football game

Hey Hawkeyes!

Like many of you, we are excited that the 2019 football season begins this Saturday. Students play a valuable role in the tradition of Hawkeye football, both as players on the field and fans in the stadium. Respect for others is a key component of The IOWA Challenge which calls on us to be good neighbors and make Iowa City a great place to live.

Hawks Nest, the official student section of Iowa Athletics, was instrumental in collaborating with similar groups from other Big Ten institutions to create the Big Ten Sportsmanship and Spirit Agreement (https://www.uihawksnest.org/b1g-sportsmanship/). This Agreement and the UI home game safety policies have been developed to ensure the experience of all Hawkeye fans and visitors to Kinnick Stadium is enjoyable.

A few things to remember when attending Hawkeye Football games this fall:

DO:

  1. Arrive before kick-off and stay for the entire game
  2. Show your Iowa pride by wearing black and gold
  3. Cheer for your Hawkeyes "until the game is won"
  4. Be respectful towards other fans, visiting teams, officials and our neighbors
  5. Recycle (or use garbage cans for trash)
  6. Watch the weather and make sure to stay hydrated

DON'T:

  1. Consume alcohol, engage in disruptive behavior, or use inappropriate language inside Kinnick Stadium
  2. Carry open beer, wine, or hard liquor on public sidewalks and roads -- it's against Iowa City's open container ordinance
  3. Use tobacco products, which includes cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco. The University of Iowa is a tobacco-free campus. Please help in our efforts to become a healthier campus community.
  4. Go on the field -- for your own safety, as well as the safety of players, coaches and other fans

Additional information on Iowa Football game day and Kinnick Stadium policies, can be found at (https://footballgameday.hawkeyesports.com/). If you are not able to attend the games, we hope you will still engage in ways to support our Hawkeyes in a fun, healthy manner.
