The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis is tragic, and all incidents of police brutality need to end. This incident renews our energy to act professionally in all situations, as our main objective is and always will be keeping students, faculty, and staff safe.
Our department is dedicated to breaking down barriers between police and the students we serve, and we will continue to work on developing relationships with our students to learn how we can improve safety on campus.
In addition to completing the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and training required by the state, University of Iowa Department of Public Safety officers go through a variety of supplemental training, which includes but is not limited to:
- Fair and Impartial Policing
- RITE Academy Training
- Crisis Intervention Training
- Some of our officers have also completed courses as part of the university's BUILD program
We will not tolerate anything but a safe and inclusive campus for people of all backgrounds and will continue to evaluate opportunities to further educate and train our officers.
