University of Iowa Police make arrest in connection with Saturday Hawk Alert

The University of Iowa Police Department has made an arrest in connection with an attempted sexual assault reported behind Mayflower Residence Hall on Saturday, Sept. 23, which later led the department to issue a Hawk Alert. 

UI Police arrested Fitsum Russell, 28, of Cedar Rapids on Monday, Sept. 25. He is charged with assault with intent to commit sex abuse, a Class D felony. 

UI Police would like to thank the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Attorney’s Office, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and Linn County Sheriff’s Office, for their assistance with this case. 

The department would also like to thank members of the UI community who reported this incident to police.
