We also provide a Sexual Assault Referral Matrix as well.
What should I do if I am sexually assaulted?
Being the victim of a sexual assault is extremely traumatizing, but it is important to notify authorities and get help as soon as possible. If you, or a friend, are the victim of a sexual assault, do the following:
- Your safety is the most important. Go to a place of refuge.
- Tell a friend.
- Seek medical care. Sexual assault is a unique crime because the victim's body is the crime scene, which adds to the trauma of the attack. Sexual assault is a medical emergency and trained staff are located at the emergency departments of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Mercy Hospital.
- Preserve any evidence. Text messages, clothing and other physical evidence can greatly enhance an investigation if you decide to choose that option. The sooner evidence can be gathered, the more accurate the investigation will be. If the assault occurred recently, do not change clothes, eat, drink, shower, or clean-up in any way. All of these aspects are important for documentation.
The 'Date Rape' Drug
If you suspect you have been slipped a date rape drug, it is especially important to get help fast. Some of these drugs leave the body’s system within hours. Try to avoid urinating until a medical staff can collect a sample.
Consider contacting police as quickly as possible. Although sexual assault is traumatic and sometimes embarrassing, do not hesitate to contact the police. As soon as you are safe, call 911 and an officer will be dispatched to your location for assistance immediately. Even if you are unsure if you have been a victim of sexual assault, still contact the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety and you will receive any necessary care.
