Campus Security Authority

As a Campus Security Authority, you contribute to the safety of our campus community by reporting certain criminal incidents of which you are made aware.

Under federal law, the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety is required to report and publish statistics regarding certain kinds of crimes reported to the institution. As a Campus Security Authority, you are a crucial piece of this reporting structure. To ensure that we are capturing a complete, accurate count of campus-related crime incidents, we ask you to either report any incidents you are aware of, or confirm that you have no incidents to report.

The federal law describes specifically what kinds of incidents must be reported. If any of the below crimes have been reported to you and you have not already reported them, then you must complete a CSA Incident Report form.

  • Murder/non-negligent manslaughter
  • Negligent manslaughter
  • Sex offenses (rape, fondling, incest or statutory rape)
  • Robbery
  • Burglary
  • Aggravated assault
  • Motor vehicle theft
  • Arson
  • Domestic violence
  • Dating violence
  • Stalking

If you do not know for certain whether or not the crime was reported to a local police agency or if it falls under any of these categories, please complete the form anyway. Provide as much information as you have, including the date, time and location of the incident. If you do not know specifics about time or location, be as descriptive as possible with the information you have.

Please remember, criminal incidents should be reported in a timely manner and the incident reporting form is available throughout the year. The university has a responsibility to quickly inform the campus community of serious crimes which may pose an ongoing public safety threat, and Campus Security Authorities are obligated by law to report qualifying crimes immediately to the University of Iowa Police Division. We thank you for your prompt reporting and for ensuring our campus remains safe for all who live, work and study here.
