On Tuesday, Oct. 3, at approximately 3:23 p.m., UI Police officers responded to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Emergency Department for a report of a possible domestic assault involving a weapon.

As officers arrived, the suspect’s vehicle was spotted leaving the area of the hospital. Officers followed the vehicle for a short distance before initiating a traffic stop at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Byington Road, at which point the vehicle fled and a pursuit ensued.

The suspect abandoned his vehicle near the intersection of Tanglewood Street and Ventura Avenue and fled on foot toward I-80. He was taken into custody north of I-80, just south of Kyle Drive NE at approximately 3:58 p.m. No injuries were reported in connection with the pursuit, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The suspect, later identified as Christopher C. Morgan, 38, of Cusseta, Ga. was arrested and charged with:

  • Kidnapping in the first degree, a class A felony
  • Willful injury causing serious injury, a class C felony
  • Domestic Abuse Assault – third or subsequent offense, a class D felony
  • Dominion/control a firearm by a domestic abuse offender, a class D felony
  • Interference with official acts — displaying a dangerous weapon, a class D felony
  • Harassment in the first degree, an aggravated misdemeanor
  • Driving while license under suspended, denied, revoked, or barred, a serious misdemeanor
  • Reckless Driving, a simple misdemeanor
  • Excessive Speeding, a simple misdemeanor
  • Unsafe entry onto a sidewalk or roadway, a simple misdemeanor

This is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be filed. A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
