Police Division

The UI Department of Public Safety is responsible for emergency response on the University of Iowa campus. The largest division is the Police Division, which is made up of 45 state certified police officers who patrol the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition to completing the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and training required by the state, UI DPS officers go through a variety of supplemental training, which includes but is not limited to: Fair and Impartial Policing, RITE Academy (Racial Intelligence) Training, Crisis Intervention Training, and the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI). Some officers have also completed a selection of training from the university’s BUILD series.

All area law enforcement departments also attend Multi-Agency Training System (M.A.T.S), which includes training on the following topics: ethics, crowd control, diversity, equity and inclusion, civil rights, LGBTQ+ communities.

Community Outreach

Our department’s philosophy is that, by breaking down barriers between the students and police, a more meaningful channel of communication can be opened up for the department to receive candid feedback from students that will enable the department to better fulfill its mission. Community Policing activities vary by semester, but a few key initiatives are outlined below.

  • Encouraging officers to have positive interactions with students where the students feel most comfortable (through participation in intramurals, community service projects, and other student-centered activities).
  • Hiring student security officers and interns who can play an active role in peer education and enhancing campus safety.
  • Implementing other educational programs and activities that bring students and officers together.
  • Identifying officers to serve as liaisons to student organizations.
