UIPD trains on Fair and Impartial Policing strategies

The UI Police Department began Fair and Impartial Policing (FIP) training this semester after sending a group of officers to a course in Davenport last spring. The training program, which was developed by the U.S. Department of Justice, emphasizes that even well-intentioned people have implicit biases that can influence their actions, that recognizing those biases is key in learning how to override them, and that policing based on biases can be unsafe, ineffective, and unjust.

UI DPS introduces app to enhance student safety

The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety is giving students, faculty, and staff another layer of protection with the help of a mobile application called Hawk Watch.

Hawk Watch, which is powered by the campus safety app Rave Guardian, allows users to invite friends, family, or UI DPS to act as a virtual safety escort, or “guardian,” when they travel from one location to another.

UI Police make arrest following false report of active shooter

The University of Iowa Police Department has arrested one person following the false report of an active shooter at Burge Residence Hall over the weekend.

Harrison Tsimouris, an 18-year-old UI student and resident of Burge, was arrested at 7:46 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, after admitting the text message he sent was intended to be a prank. He was later charged with filing a false report to a public entity.

At approximately 5:08 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, the University of Iowa Police Department received a call from a student on campus who reported that he had received a text message from a friend about an emergency at Burge Residence Hall. The text message indicated there was an active shooter in the building, and directed the friend to call police. 

The UI Police Department immediately dispatched officers to Burge, where residents were in the process of evacuating the building upon their arrival at 5:10 p.m.

UIPD issues Crime Alert 16-11

University of Iowa officials received a report of a sexual assault that occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, October 15th, 2016. The victim reported being approached outside an east side residence hall by the suspect who initiated a conversation with the victim. The victim was then taken to a nearby corner of the building where the incident took place.  The victim yelled and the suspect left the scene. The suspect is described as a 6' 3" male older than college age. The UI Police Department encourages community members to report suspicious persons/activity immediately by calling 911 or (319) 335-5022.

UIPD issues Crime Alert 16-10

The University of Iowa Police received a report that a sexual assault occurred over late night hours of September 30 to the early morning hours of October 1st, 2016 at an east side residence hall. Indications are the assault may have been perpetrated by an acquaintance.

UIPD issues Crime Alert 16-09

The University of Iowa received a report that a sexual assault occurred over the weekend of September 23-25th, 2016 at an unidentified fraternity house. The reporting party said they arrived at the fraternity house with friends, but became separated, and then was assaulted by an unknown assailant.
